THE LIFELONG SECRET OF THE SUCCESSFUL
"...Have you ever asked yourself what is the difference between the achiever and the mediocre? The difference is not only their mindset, but how well they understand the lifestyle of diligence and how are they given this timeless truth." - Rotimi Odejayi
To succeed means to realize a predefined set goals or objectives. For example, a student who succeeds is one who attains exactly his set-out projections after an examination. Attaining success is as simple as following it lay-down principles. The five building lifelong features of the successful are: Desire, Determination, Diligence, Discretion and Discipline. Judging by various interactions with contemporary successful-men and research from time memorial have shown that the lifelong secret of the successful is Diligence. That is, what characterizes the life of the successful is diligence. This is because everything yields to diligence. Alas, elusive among today’s youths is the lifestyle of Diligence. The aim of this presentation is to create in us a culture of diligent, so that we can succeed in life.
What then is Diligence?
A lexicon defines the word “diligence” to mean “conscientiousness (something characterized by extreme care and great effort) in paying proper attention to a task; giving the degree of care required in a great situation. A diligent effort is one that is hardworking or/and industrious. Diligence is the earnest, conscientious application of our energy to accomplish what we’ve undertaken.
When we are diligent, we pay careful attention to detail and are dedicated to achieving quality results.
The five dynamics (ways to view) of diligence
1. Industry: To be industrious is to be labourious and hardworking in whatever you are doing. Since no good thing comes easily, then you put in hard-work to excel in life. Industry in this context means going the extra mile at attaining the desired goal through work. “There exist limitless opportunities in every industry. Where there is an open mind, there will always be a frontier.” - Charles F. Kettering (American engineer, inventor of the electric starter, 1876-1958).
2. Act-right: Hear this definition first; Diligence is “Having the right heart (mind) to do the right thing at the right time, in the right place and at the right way”. Having enough wisdom to know the right thing to do at the right time is diligence. According to Arsene Wenger in an interview he granted in December 2012, he said, “You can only be good in life if you do what you believe is right."
3. Wisdom: It the people who are wise that actually succeed. It is the application of wisdom that makes you do the right thing, and this will lead to success. In the actualization of success, wisdom is the principal (most pivotal) thing. ‘Wisdom is profitable to direct’, so says The Preacher.
4. Organize your Life and Systematize your Work: This means to be very thorough in what you do. Success comes when you are thorough enough to organize your life via the use of a time-table and follow a prescribed system for living. This work speaks louder than voice. Horace said, “Life grants nothing to us mortals without hard work.”
5. Not Giving-Up: There is usually a thin line of demarcation between attaining a successful feat and failing. One powerful dynamics of diligence is never to give up. Recall, winners never quit, just as quitters never win.
